As a coach who works with women in burnout, one of the biggest issues I see is women overextending themselves.
I love working under stress. I love projects with deadlines, the hustle and bustle of it all. Busy, busy—which is fine if you do it in strides and just don't live there all the time.
We really need to take better care of ourselves or our bodies will put us in shutdown.
When I was living in burnout, the biggest lesson I learnt was—don’t overextend yourself!
I know; it’s easier said than done.
Managing your energy and time is so important.
Okay, Denise, how do I do this?
When working with women, the first thing I help them with is getting clear on what is important to them. I help them declutter their lives.
How to declutter your life:
Get clear on what is important to you—your values, purpose, and what brings you joy/happiness. Take a look at what you have committed yourself to. Remove things that are not in alignment with you. This usually includes creating boundaries. Boundaries are limits you put into place to protect yourself, your time and energy. Once you start removing things that don't align with you, you may feel lighter and sometimes excited to start doing the things you enjoy.
Once you have removed things that do not align with you, look at things you can delegate or group commitments together.
Reality is if you don't take of yourself you become unproductive as you start to become fatigued. You start making mistakes too. This is your body telling you that you need a rest.
Take a break! How many of us ignore this? I know I have!
If you are doing something physical, switch it up with something tamer. If you are sitting at a desk, switch it up with something more physical. Take a break and do something simple: making myself a nice lunch, going outside, calling a friend, yoga, dancing, meditation, music, etc.
When we start taking care of ourselves, we become more relaxed, aligned, productive and happier and can contribute to the world around us more.
Think of the areas in your life where you can get help, where you can use support. Think of how much fun it would be to do it with someone else so that the entire burden is not on you.
