Many devout Jews wouldn't set foot in Samaria, much less talk to anyone there, much less a woman. There was a 700 year old problem that never went away in Samaria. It was as if there was a "Mini-Assyria" that lived right in the middle part of Israel. No wonder the Jews hated people from there, and even the area itself.
