“Wives submit, Husbands love, Children obey, Fathers bring them up…” (Colossians 3:18-21; Eph.6:4)
God has a blueprint which is a detailed plan of action, a schematic which is a drawn out plan, a well-defined purpose for the family. That’s because the family is important to God. That is the understatement of all time. He invented it, established it, and works to make it what He intended it to be. To show this we have this statement in Malachi 2:16, “I hate divorce.” Bible writers never overstate anything. God hates divorce! Why? Because it hurts the family and if it hurts the family it is not good, and if it’s not good it’s not of God.
God invented marriage and performed the first ceremony. Jesus’ first public act after baptism was to bless a wedding and He performed His first miracle at one. The family is important to God.
The modern family needs help, perhaps like never before. If you don’t know this you need to come out of your cave and take a look around. A pastor friend of mine said he led his church to Denver to do a month of VBS in four different neighborhood churches. He told me it took them into the third week to find kids who had the same last name as their parents.
The family needs help and God wants to help. He will help if we cooperate with Him. He will help you with His Spirit. Before the lengthiest passage in the Bible on the family we have this verse, “Be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Eph.5:18) God helps the family by giving us His word. Before our present passage we have, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Col.3:16) If we will do what He says we can have the family God designed for us. He has plenty of help so we can do just that. To have a family as God set it up, please take a very long look at the passage that proceeds this one: Col.3:12-17. This is the foundation for the precise instructions given by God to each member of the family in Col.3:18-21. Do this and the responsibilities will come naturally, even joyfully and easy.
God also gives help by the church, other members of the church who have successful families. For example, Grace Church has four pastors with a combined experience of 175 years without a divorce. Here is a wealth of help for anyone struggling in their marriage and family. Seek these people out. Quickly. These are men and women who are here to help you. God has put them in your life to counsel you. Get their counsel. What other church around here has four pastors with so many years of successful families? They have learned some things you need to know. Seek them out. If you have experienced divorce, forget it and move on. Start where you are. Say, “No more! I will have a godly home!”
