Be an example to others.
The best way to become a good example to others is to learn and grow spiritually and keep God's good Old Testament commandments. The law is the foundation of a proper and good life. Proverbs 4:2 NKJV says, "For I give you good doctrine; do not forsake my law." I repeat this for those who are just starting out. Some of the commandments are for men, some for women, some for the priests, some for farmers, and there are some other categories.
For example, anyone who teaches the people to not keep God's Old Testament commandments is a false teacher or prophet and we are not supposed to listen to them. Deuteronomy 13:3-4 NKJV says, "You shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments." This commandment applies to everyone. If someone aspires to be a teacher or prophet, they are to be careful to teach God's Old Testament commandments. How do we find out what the Bible says? We read the Bible. That's how I found out what is the true doctrine we are to follow. Of course, I have been studying awhile and have two Bible degrees and have worked towards my Doctorate in Religious Studies.
We also need to learn from each other. My mother would talk to me perhaps beginning at age 5 about how to keep God's Old Testament commandments. Learn how to do what is right through what the Bible teaches, from Bible teachers who teach to keep God's commandments, and from the example of those who keep God's commandments.
Also, the New Testament commandments are mostly applications of the Old Testament commandments. So, we can learn from them sometimes. For example, Leviticus 19:18-19 says we are to forgive others and treat them like we would like to be treated. Ephesians adds some application to this commandment. Ephesians 4:32 NKJV says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another." Being kind to others is one the ways to treat others the way we want to be treated.
When we learn how we are to behave, we need to decide to apply that. Then, we change and begin doing what the Bible says. Of course, we are also to ask God to forgive us for not keeping His good instructions. It is then we are forgiven, but we must firmly repent of our wrongdoing. Psalms 103:10-12 NKJV says, "He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us." How far is the east from the west? It would seem that they never meet because they go in the opposite direction. God is merciful towards those who change and stop sinning.
