Israel was to be a different kind of nation. God was their King. He blessed Israel by, among other things, giving them His laws, providing for them, protecting them, and leading them into battle. But as time went on, being led by an invisible King became a bit much for the people. They wanted to be like the rest of the nations; they wanted an earthly king to do all the things God had been doing for them, and this got them in a lot of trouble.
