Understanding the story of the OT requires an understanding of “covenant (berit).” The basis of God’s relationship with Israel, the descendants of Abraham, was conditioned upon the obedience of the people (“if…, then…”). However, God established unconditional covenant promises along the way that find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus.
