Dr. Jenn Parker is a pelvic health and orthopedic physical therapist and owner of Embody Wellness Physical Therapy in Livermore, CA. She specializes working with both men and women with symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction including bowel, bladder and/or sexual dysfunction but has a special interest in preparing moms for birth as well as safe return to movement/exercise postpartum. She is also a soon-to-be new mom herself! Baby boy is due early November :)
In this episode she shared with us and our listeners some key things to know about the pelvic floor and when to know if you should seek out a pelvic floor physical therapist. This was such an eye opening conversation as we discussed what some of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction might be whether you’ve had a baby or not and even if it’s been years and years since you had a baby. You might be surprised to know that that nagging hip or back pain may not be your hip or back but actually your pelvic floor.
Some other things we discussed with Jenn:
•In honor of October being National Physical Therapy Month she shared how she chose to specialize in Pelvic Physical Therapy and some of the things she treats with this specialty.
•How pelvic floor physical therapy can support women’s health. Why it needs to be more known about and leveraged.
•What should our listeners know about their own pelvic health and symptoms that may be connected to dysfunction
•Symptoms and issues that appear/occur years after having children that can be tied to the pelvic floor
•Birth preparation - both her own and what she teaches patients
Some key takeaways:
•It’s never too late to get in to see a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist to find possible healing and relief.
•In many other countries every single mom goes to pelvic PT postpartum
•There is support and help out there. You may just have to ask for a referral or search for yourself.
•Get empowered. Take control and advocate for yourself.
