Welcome to episode seven of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we return to the Book of 1 Timothy and cover chapter 4. The title of the message is, “The Church and Its Minister.” We discuss:
- Godless shepherds (the false teachers) in vv. 1-5
- Godly shepherds in vv. 6-16
Key takeaways:
- Paul had warned the Ephesian elders that false teachers would invade the church (Acts 20:28–31); and now they had arrived. He warns Timothy about some of the traits of the false teachers.
- In every generation, there will be Christians who fall away from the faith.
- In the leader’s ministry and life, God’s Word and its application must be central.
- Being a faithful follower of Jesus requires intentionality and discipline.
- Nothing proves the veracity of the gospel as well as evidence of its life-changing power. Our lives are to setan example for others in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
Quotable:
The soundness of a church depends on ministers and leaders who are sound in their faith and practice.
Application:
- When facing false teaching, we must first expose the errors we oppose. Second, we must also develop personal holiness to assure that we continue in integrity.
- Some false teaching is best ignored rather than discussed. Instead of entertaining dialog on the matter, the better course of action is to teach the truth.
- Just as we discipline our bodies for physical activity, we must discipline our minds to engage in spiritual activities.
- When God calls us into His work, He equips us for the task.
