Mary and Martha are friends and followers of Jesus and welcome him into their home and lives. Martha is preoccupied with the duties of hosting while Mary sits and listens to Jesus. This story reminds us of how Jesus calls us to value the fellowship of being present with those we love. Where have we made our faith in Jesus more about what we are doing for him instead of doing with him? The context of this story in Luke is that it comes after the disciples being sent out by Jesus then coming back excited about all the amazing things they did in His name, the the parable of the Good Samaritan who showed compassion. We then have the contrast of the two sisters -one who is busy doing, and the other who just wants to be in the presence of Jesus.
