I believe that many in the Church truly and sincerely believe that the HOLY and JUST God of the Old Testament Scriptures somehow become a 'soft and over-generous' "Candy-man" God in the Church age. A lot of Believers in the Church age foolishly believe that their 'sugar-daddy' God has 'softened up' and freely (i.e. unconditionally) and lavishly (i.e. unendingly) 'sprinkles' His children with all kinds of 'tasty' spiritual and earthly sweets'...simply because they are His children! As I share quite often in my podcasts there are numerous reasons for this silly and foolish type of unbiblical thinking. The most obvious reason is that the churches are full of biblically ignorant sheep. Another reason is that a godly, healthy, biblically based fear of God is nearly non-existent in the churches today. And another reason that so many sheep are 'living' their spiritually lives in an imaginary "LA LA land' world is that the churches are loaded with shepherds with no spiritual backbones, and no biblical wisdom. Self-professing 'men of the Lord', who have a very limited understanding on God's biblical Truths; and men who 'avoid' teaching the whole counsel of God's Word when they do know it, out of a fear of 'offending' the sheep! (Brethren....it takes much more than simply being born-again to please the Father!)
