As Christians, God considers us righteous in Christ. It doesnโt mean that weโre sinlessly perfect. In and of ourselves, we are still sinners. But by our faith in Jesus, His righteousness is now imputed (or transferred) into our account. This is the heart of the gospel. The Protestant Reformers used the Latin phrase, ๐จ๐๐ข๐ช๐ก ๐๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ช๐จ ๐๐ฉ ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ค๐ง, which literally means โsimultaneously righteous and sinnerโ. We are both a saint and a sinner at the same time. The good news is that whenever we sin, โIf we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousnessโ (1 Jn 1:9). For this reason, in the Lordโs Prayer, Jesus teaches us to regularly confess our sins to God, who will freely โ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐, as we have forgiven those who sin against usโ (Mt 6:12 NLT). ๐ง๐ผ ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐, ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ โ not just repenting once at conversion, but daily, weโre to purify ourselves, just as He is pure (1 Jn 3:3). This is how we grow in holiness โ to be holy as He is holy (1 Pet 1:16). This is not being sin-conscious or condemnation-minded. We'd never consider our daily showering as dirt-consciousness. We shower simply because it is necessary hygiene. Similarly, every time we seek Godโs forgiveness in prayer, weโre taking a spiritual โshowerโ, and weโll always be refreshed, renewed and recharged after that. Iโve learned to use the ๐ง๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ in my daily prayer (Ex 20:3-17; Deut 5:7-21). For sure, the Ten Commandments canโt save us. Weโre saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. But they are the 10 expressions of Godโs personal and eternal morality. So theyโre very useful for showing us if and where weโve sinned. For the next few minutes, I want to invite you to pray them together with me. Praying this kind of prayer regularly will change our lives. I know this for a fact because it has certainly changed mine.ย
