As we think about the first time we heard this story, we might recall that it’s a story about a man who ran from God’s call, threw himself into the sea, was swallowed by a whale, prayed to God, and was spit out because God spared him and gave him a second chance. But a look at the deeper truths reveals that this story is about Jonah’s will vs. God’s will. God’s will was merciful and good. Jonah’s was not. When they came into conflict, Jonah knew he wouldn’t win, but he could not see that it was good that he would not win. For him, it was better for him to die than to surrender to God’s plan for him. Jonah failed to see God’s compassion for him, and he became angry with God. God doesn’t deserve our anger. He wants us to act with compassion as we have been given compassion.
Connor sits down to talk about even more of the fascinating details of Jonah's story. Oh, and, Jason tells Teresa what he calls the "whale" to his kids instead.
