Persecution and Heresy
Peter to Miltiades
Our Catholic Church began in Jerusalem, where the apostles remained, as did our Lord's immediate disciple James, described as a brother of our Lord. Forty years after Pentecost the church in Jerusalem was dispersed, Christian;s left the city before the Roman's destroyed it. It became a deserted place and then after another rising and fifty years of desolation, a new Roman settlement. The Romans proved to be only the first of the succession of non Christian rulers, so that only for two periods, first in the twelfth century under the crusaders, and then for thirty years in this century under Great Britain, has Jerusalem been ruled by Christians.
