The USS Alabama, BB-60 was a South Dakota class battleship that served in the North Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. At the war's end, she was mothballed and stored in the Pacific Reserve Fleet in Puget Sound outside Bremerton, Washington. Twenty years later, the Navy announced in 1962 that the South Dakota class of battleships would be sold for scrap. In this episode of the Alabama Short Stories podcast, you will learn about Mobile and state officials who sprang into action to save the ship and bring her home to the port of Mobile.
