David McCauley is a professional artist, sailor, traveler, and founder of an art therapy organization. He's also quadriplegic and has been paralyzed for a similar timeline as me. We met two summers ago while sailing on the Impossible Dream, a fully accessible catamaran, and hit it off comparing notes on shared interests and a similar lived experience. When we reconnected the interview lasted for three hours so we split it up. In this first of a two part series, David shares a bit about his life before paralysis and the communal moments during his recovery that lead to the founding of RiseUP, his art therapy nonprofit organization.
