It seems living to 100 and beyond is done with great regularity in Clinton the small Central Georgia community where I grew up. I can count at least three centenarians who have reached the milestone in the last twenty years.
Mary Emma Lawson, my next-door neighbor is the latest.
Mrs. Lawson moved to Chicago, married, and had a son Mark. When her husband died, she returned to Clinton in the mid-1970s with young Mark in tow. She built a home took care of her mother and for nearly fifty years since her return, Mrs. Lawson has weathered the storms of life anchored to a faith that has never wavered. A faith that has blessed her for 100 years.
But her calling is to be a blessing to others.
A blessing to Clinton, a community that she decided to come back to despite bigger opportunities available in Chicago.
A blessing to her son Mark, standing by him when few would. Always providing a home to return to and unconditional love to help rebuild his life.
A blessing to Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, serving the Lord wherever her services were needed.
Mary Emma Lawson has lived the Godly life described in Ephesians 4:2 a life of meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing all in and with love. She is living a life of faith. A life of blessing to others for 100 years.
