"The market was starting to swing back in late 2019. At MLA Canada, we were predicting a huge “snap-back in the first half of 2020” as consumers rushed back into the market and supply remained constrained. But then COVID hit in March of 2020 and completely stalled the market, as everyone reeled and retooled and tried to understand how the pandemic would impact them. It was a very frightening time. But COVID only held the floodgates closed a little longer, building up additional pressure. As many people started to come to terms with their new realities and how to be productive, learn new patterns, understand that our world will persevere, the floodgates opened. And wow – what a rush it has been.
I feel there are two lessons here. One - that government intervention creates more violent swing in the market. And secondly, that Canadians, in general, are incredibly resilient and the vast majority have faith that the world will be a better place in the future," says McNeill.
