In today’s world, the importance of meaningful employment cannot be overstated. Many individuals with disabilities face barriers to entering the workforce, leading to a loss of identity and purpose. Today on the Porch, we’ll explore the remarkable history and impact of Redi Enterprises, a pioneering organization dedicated to empowering individuals with abilities through employment and community support. We'll dive into its origins, the various programs it offers, and the positive effects it has on both employees and the workplace.
Redi Enterprises has a rich history that dates back to 1950. Redi began as a grassroots initiative to support individuals affected by the polio epidemic. A group of compassionate women placed an ad in the local newspaper, seeking volunteers to help those in need. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become an essential part of the community.
Initially known as the Medicine and Rehabilitation Society, the organization has undergone several name changes and adaptations to better serve its mission. Today, its full legal name, Rehabilitation and Employment for Developing Independence (Redi) Enterprises Society, still retains the simple moniker "Redi" for ease of recognition.
At the core of Redi Enterprises’ mission is the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society. This philosophy stems from the understanding that individuals find identity and purpose through their work. As Josh Hudson, the executive director, emphasizes, "When you first introduce yourself to somebody, usually there are two bits of information: Who are you? And what do you do?" This highlights how intertwined our identities are with our professions.
Redi Enterprises has developed a range of programs aimed at providing individuals with disabilities the skills and opportunities to thrive in the workforce. Its employment division has been a staple since the 1970s, and it has consistently received positive feedback from employers about the reliability and dedication of its employees.
