Ghana is the second largest cocoa producer in the world, contributing to 25% of global cocoa production. Coupled with Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana makes up one of the most prominent West African nations that deliver the majority of the world’s cocoa supply.Despite the critical role Ghana plays in providing the key ingredient to this worldly indulgence, however, the country is at serious risk of decreasing cocoa productivity down the road. Following the passing of the sustainable cocoa initiative into law, the Ghanaiangovernment has reaffirmed its willingness to comply with the regulation. The lawwhich came to pass on the 28 th of June aims to track cocoa beans to curb deforestationand weed out child labor along the value chain. However, the environmental andsocial justice initiative by the EU comes at a cost for both farmers and consumers.
