John 17 Intercessor – to plead on behalf of another to the authorities
How important is this chapter, how important is Jesus last prayer to the Father on our behalf? What does He believe to be our biggest challenges, that He requests His Father to help us to accomplish them? Is this prayer only for the ears of the Father, or was it not recorded for our benefit, are we trying to accomplish what He prayed for?
1. Jesus prays for us to know both the Father and the Christ VS.1-5
Vs.1 Glorify Your Son that the Son may Glorify You John 10:17-18; Romans 1:4
Vs.2 He may give eternal life - John 6:44; John 5:24
Vs.3 this is eternal life that they may know You – 1 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 John 5:13
The OT points forward to understand the Christ as Christ points back to understand the Father. Luke 24:45; conviction John 3:5
Vs.4 I have glorified You – John 5:36; 14:9-11; 19:30
Vs.5 Glorify Me with You – Philippians 2:5-8; Matthew 28:18
Christ Glorifies the Father from the cross because of the resurrection
Now we know this was their plan from the beginning.
2. Jesus prays for the Father to keep us together in the authority of His name. VS.6-12
Vs.6 They were yours, you gave them to Me. Matthew 16:17
Vs.7,8 Now they know – John 6:68
Vs.9,10 I have been glorified in them Matthew 5:16
Vs.11,12 Keep them in Your name (Jesus) Acts 4:12; John 16:24; Colossians 3:12f
3. Jesus prays for the Father to guard us from evil VS.13-15
Vs.13 I speak so they may have My joy Hebrews 12:2; Cross was not a mistake!
Vs.14 They are not of this world, Philippians 3:11
Vs.15 Keep them, guard them from PONAROS – toilsome, Matthew 6:13; Toilsome – Genesis 3:1,17; 1 John 2:16; Ephesians 5:15-17; 6:5-7; 1 Corinthians 10:13;
4. Jesus prays to sanctify us in the truth of God's Word VS.16-19
Vs.16,17 Sanctify them in the truth, John 8:31,32; Open their hearts for understanding.
Vs.18 As You sent Me Matthew 5:17; I sent them Matthew 28:20
Vs.19 I sanctify Myself – DBR
5. Jesus prays for our unity, single mindedness VS.20-23
Vs.20-21 They may be one – You in Me and I in You and they in Us. That the world may believe that you sent Me. Acts 5:38,39
Vs.22 the glory You have given Me, I gave them, John 1:33; 16:7
Vs.23 perfected in unity, Ephesians 4;4-6
Vs.24 they may be with Me where I am – Hebrews 12:22f; John 4:23
6. Jesus prays for our growth in love VS.25-26
Vs.25,26 John 21:15Simon, son of Jonah, Do you love Me? Feed my lambs
Jesus in His last hours with His last prayer for us, to the Father, has hopefully brought to our attention, these requests for our spiritual survival. Do we respect His prayer for us, by doing everything we can to work with the Father to fulfill these requests ourselves.
Are we striving to have: A deeper understanding of the Father, His will doing all things in the name of Jesus keeping from idleness To be sanctified to be unified growing in love together.
