MARK 14 ARROGANCE / HUMILITY
Arrogance – unwarranted pride and self importance, puffed up, beauty, brains, bucks,
1-11 – Home of Simon the Leper in Bethany
Comes a rich woman Mary John 12:1-8; with expensive perfume worth a year’s wages.
Key is her humility, for this rich woman to enter a leper’s home.
Breaks the bottle, knowing Judas wanted to sell it, John 12:6
The disciples complain, virtue signalling to the leper, bought into Judas ploy? John 12
12-31 – Jerusalem – Passover
12-16 John & Peter sent to prepare – everything Jesus says happens – Mark 11:1-5;
Possible arrogance with Peter, James and John over the others, Mark 10:35f
Mark 9:2f always same three; Mark 9:33-37; why ask who’s greatest?
17-25 Passover – one of you will betray Me, “Surely not I” their response would
Reflect their level of arrogance, not asking to expose Judas.
26-31 Leaving – prophecy scatter the sheep – Peter not I! Pure arrogance
Deny Me 3 x. insistently – all joined in with arrogance, we are better than that.
32-42 – Gethsemane
32-42 Keep watch – knowing the mob was coming,
they slept 3x spirit willing flesh weak, stay awake for 1 hour?
Vs. 36 not My will but Thine be done – defeats arrogant attitudes.
Your will doesn’t count Mark 8:34; deny self!
43-50 Judas kiss, cut off an ear, to fulfill scriptures, arrogance dies when reality kicks in.
51-52 Mark running away naked
53-72 High Priest’s home
53-59 False testimony, false testimony, inconsistent testimony, height of arrogance.
60-65 Hight Priest questions - Do you not answer? How does one answer false statements?
Are you the Christ – I am! This should have rocked the HP, we read right past it.
Arrogance – they all join in, condemning Christ – spit, beat, slap.
66-72 Peter’s denials – questioned by a little girl, 2X, wow. Would I do better?
