Many online dieting apps. include a feature that allows you to enter your height, weight, age, and weight loss goal, and voila -out comes the perfect calorie amount (and sometimes macronutrient levels) to lose weight. In theory, this sounds like a logical, science-based way to determine the best calorie level at which you could lose weight. However, there are some flaws in these apps that we discuss in today's episode. In particular, if you have a history of chronic dieting or are undereating, these online dieting apps could set your calories too high to lose weight--and could even cause undesired weight gain. Alternatively, if you are eating a healthy amount, some of these online apps. will set calories unnecessarily low, which could make your "diet" difficult if not impossible to adhere to, cause your weight loss to plateau very quickly, and slow down your metabolism over time. In this episode, we'll provide a case study of two women that an online dieting app. calculator would provide the same calorie calculations - but who have VASTLY different calorie needs to lose weight. 

 Listen up to learn how: 

  1. Online dieting app. calculators do not consider the health of your metabolism and could set your calories too high or too low. 
  2. Online dieting app. calculators do not take into account how your metabolism adjusts to calorie inputs and fail to calibrate your calories as your results plateau. 
  3. Almost every dieting app. calculator sets protein too low, which means you are going to be prone to lose muscle (not good for your metabolism!) on your diet. 
  4. The most effective way to set weight loss calories is based on your maintenance calories (how much you are maintaining your weight at now).
