In Minden, a passionate group of individuals is stepping up to tackle the feral cat crisis. Jane Lammers, a member of Paws Up Kearney County, shares the heartwarming and challenging journey of this organization that started just a few years ago.

Founded in March 2024, Paws Up has quickly become a beacon of hope for both feral and domestic animals in the community. "We started with taking care of feral cats around the community," Jane explains, emphasizing the need for a dedicated shelter. The organization has grown from a small group of cat lovers to a critical resource for animal welfare in the region.

The feral cat community in Minden is described as "out of control," prompting Paws Up to focus heavily on spaying and neutering efforts. Jane highlights the alarming rate at which cats can reproduce if not managed: "If you don't spay and neuter, especially a cat, they can produce so many." This proactive approach is vital in curbing the population and ensuring the health of both feral and domestic animals.

Jane shares an example of their efforts: "When we go into these communities to feed them, if we find any kittens, the first thing we do is take the mamas and the kittens out of the community because they're the most vulnerable." This hands-on approach illustrates their commitment to animal welfare.

Fundraising is essential for Paws Up's operations, especially as they aim to establish a shelter. "This year's been kinda hard on us because I had rotator cuff surgery," Jane notes. Despite these challenges, the organization typically aims for at least one fundraiser each month, whether through local events or food fundraisers.

Collaboration is a key theme in Paws Up's efforts. They work closely with other local organizations, such as the Good Life Rescue, to ensure that both cats and dogs receive the care they need. Jane describes how fostering relationships with other rescues helps them manage the animal population more effectively.

They are also part of the PetSmart community, which provides additional resources such as grants and food donations. Jane's dedication to improving the lives of animals in Minden shines through as she discusses their plans to extend their outreach to neighboring communities in the future.

As Jane passionately shares their ongoing efforts, it becomes clear that the work of Paws Up Kearney County is far from over. The need for a shelter and increased community support remains critical.
