American culture has been on a downhill slide for some time. You know that if you are an adult past middle age. What used to be considered wrong or immoral is now often celebrated--like promiscuity, or at least ignored--like Smash and Grab retail crime. Question is, how long can a civilization maintain if its shared values are shattered, if no standards of right and wrong or appropriate behavior are recognized, if no judgements of good, bad, and ugly can be made? In 1993, Sen Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote about this trend, calling it "defining deviancy down."
