We are kicking off a series on Jonah. Jonah is one of the most known and least understood books in scripture. When most of us think of Jonah we think of the big fish, or we think of VeggieTales and the pirates who don’t do anything. But rarely do we actually grasp what this book is about. Jonah is unique among the prophetic books of the Bible because Jonah barely does any prophecy. Like his contemporary Hosea, Jonah’s story is meant to point you to Yahweh’s heart. As we see Jonah’s self righteous and wicked heart exposed we see God’s relentless love pursuing him. No, Jonah isn’t a story about a fish, the Ninevites, or even Jonah, its a story about God and his heart for broken humanity. So, as we dive into this short little book this summer my hope is that our hearts are melted by God’s relentless love for prodigals and pagans like you and me.
