This week’s miracle from the gospel of John is the shortest account of any of the miracles John records. It’s even a shorter version of the same miracle that’s recorded in both Matthew and Mark. But don’t let its brevity fool you. This miracle packs a punch and leaves us in awe of Jesus. Don’t miss this weekend’s message “Walking on Water.”
SERIES: BELIEVE
There is always more to miracles than what meets the eye. They’re intended to remind us of Who Jesus is. This is especially true when it comes to the Gospel of John. When John tells the story of Jesus, he intentionally selects 7 miracles – what he calls “signs” – because of the message behind these supernatural events. John wants us to see Jesus as we never have before so that we might BELIEVE and by believing, we might have LIFE in His name.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Everyone in life will face storms especially if you’re a believer. Sometimes, we even find ourselves in the midst of a storm because we are following God’s leadership and direction in our life (much like the disciples did in this story). Describe a time when you’ve weathered a storm and knew you were in the center of God’s will. How did that affect you? In what ways did it test your faith?
2. One of the most consistent messages throughout all Scripture is the injunction to not be afraid. Why is that such an important commandment? Why is our default fear? What recurrent fears do you struggle with? What have been the keys in overcoming your fears?
3. Scripture tells us not to fear. It also tells us why. With every command to not be afraid, there is some promise or quality of God that we are told to cling to instead of our fears. In other words, fear is not something we eradicate, it’s something we replace. What truths have been essential to you in overcoming fear? What promises do you claim when fear arises?
