Henri Nouwen described spiritual disciplines as "...the effort to create some space in which God can act." Bottom line, we can't make ourselves grow. We can only put ourselves in a place where God can grow us and change us. This is why we engage in spiritual disciplines. God grows us but it's our job to open ourselves up to His influence by giving Him space to work.
