Ever fancied trying your hand at bowling? As in lawn bowls, not the indoor ten-pin type - and nothing to do with cricket.Isn't it a sport for old people? Not necessarily. It does have that reputation, but nowadays bowling clubs are attracting younger people and family memberships are gaining in popularity. Our intrepid podcast host and producer, Ben, was keen to have a go (any excuse to bunk off!) He headed down to Twyford Bowling Club and caught up with its chairperson, Ann Harris, who kindly showed him the ropes. Or rather, the green, the mat, the jack and the woods... Ann outlines the history of the club, its connection to a well-known brewery, its membership and its events. Although bowling is often perceived as a genteel past-time for later life, Ann explains that league matches are fiercely contested and there is strong rivalry between local clubs in 'friendlies', even between mates playing a social game.
