Wendy Lockinge looks back on her childhood and fast tracking into the police force, where she meets Robbie Lockinge. He warns her that they can never have a life together unless she shares the secret of his undercover work for a Government agency.
She agrees, becomes a high-profile figure after her success bringing a multi-murderer to justice.
But her dreams are shattered when Robbie disappears, possibly captured on a mission. Wendy is relocated as a senior University figure at the University of Urmston. At the acceptance speech, she promises to build on the university's reputation and will accept that she will not be using skills from her old profession to keep her colleagues of students in order.
She sets about reforming the administration, but is unable to resist testing new visitors by pretending to be the secretary not the Vice Chancellor.
Later, she is approached by her mentor Sir Bertie Farm who indicates she is needed to help with a serious problem in a top-secret scientific laboratory with links to the University. She has no option but to accept.
