Matthew 13:10-17 is the text for this sermon entitled, "The Purpose of the Parables."
In this chapter, Jesus has shared a parable with the crowd and with his disciples. After the story, Jesus interrupts himself to answer the question, "Why do you teach in parables?" The answer gives us insight into how and why Jesus used parables to teach and to emphasize the need for “understanding.” This means comprehension with the process of transforming taking
place.
Matthew 13:12 is amazing! It is a reference to fruitful and faithful stewardship of understanding! It is one of the clearest statements by Jesus himself about his pedagogy. It is interesting that this explanation of the purpose parables comes between the Parable of the Sower and Jesus’ explanation of that parable.
