The New Testament says that the things written in previous times were written for our instruction so that we would have hope (see Romans 15:4). Israel failed to find pleasure in their identity as God's loved people (Deuteronomy 7:6-8). What made them special was that God chose to loved them! In Christ, we have a new identity as God's beloved daughters and sons (2 Co 6:18).
