BOYS in the BOAT. What a wild ride it has been. Sellout crowds, applause with the credit crawl, and popcorn by the bushel. My feeling, other than the obvious windfall profit to the FAE bottom line, is that George Clooney did an admirable job of directing an old-school, feel-good throwback period piece. I think he knew what he wanted going in and achieved it. Not even David Lean could condense the magnitude and expanse of David James Brown’s sprawling Magnus-opus into a two hour feature. I appreciate the drama created in the final scene, despite knowing the outcome. Both Clooney and Brown claim that the real reason behind not shooting in Seattle was due to the plethora of architectural change occurring over the last 87 years, and not because our incentives to filmmakers is minimal.
FALLEN LEAVES. The first of our pair of International films begins Friday. Synopsis (from RT) In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a local karaoke bar. However, the pair's path to happiness is beset by numerous obstacles -- from lost numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog. OK, cool, sounds like Woody Allen meets Harry and Sally. We shall see.
MENUS - PLAISIRS - LES TROIGROS is the second of our International features this fine week, it is a special two-day screening of Frederick Wiseman’s four-hour homage to a French restaurant that has kept a three-star Michelin rating for over fifty years. I have seen the trailer and it is a labor of love to both food and cinema. Despite its lengthy run time - Saturday’s screening will have an intermission at approximately the half way point - I am genuinely looking forward to it (having worked in an Italian restaurant just outside Venice another lifetime ago). Big thanks to Kathy and Billy, who now split time between Bainbridge and the actual filming location in France, for the tip on this one. Bon appetite!
All for today folks and huge thanks to those of you who have commented on our new series of local trailers. A fresh one dropped last night.
Call me anytime with questions, correspondence, advice or employment opportunities.
Cheers.
