The history of our species is fighting and killing each other. Man’s inhumanity to Man is the subtitle of the History of Humankind: the Big Book of War. Why is it so hard for us to learn the lessons of the past? That is the million dollar question, and I am afraid I have no acceptable answer, with the possible exception that in every grotesque and horrifying situation there exists the possibility that one man might walk away somehow enlightened by the experience.
PRESSURE, the movie, is another microcosmic slice of this lemon meringue trope pie, asking, along with a cup of tea, why are we doing this? Have the civilities and diplomatic options failed us so completely that our last resort is to ask a thousand young men to die to keep a twisted fascist authoritarian from ruling the world? The answer is yes, but how quickly the enlightenment fades and we seek technology to control the present and future winds of war. I used to say that war movies are too easy, as the conflict is everywhere, but the standards are now so lofty; RYAN, ETERNITY, BROTHERS, METAL JACKET and APOOCALYPSE and my under the radar fave, JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN, by the great Dalton Trumbo, that the art form is now suitable for framing. PRESSURE is drama to the highest degree, a dialogue heavy look behind the bloody scenes that we once thought we were pretty well versed upon, and sure, Branden Frasier is miscast as IKE and the melodrama occasionally slips towards the absurd, it is an intense cinematic experience, sure to invoke the proper patriotic motives. Foremost among them, the why.
DISCLOSURE DAY. Spielberg is back…with a vengeance, telling this PK Dick-esque tale as only he, the master, can. There are aliens among us, so cleverly and perfectly disguised and embedded into our culture, that the admission, almost seems a foregone conclusion. This story, finally accepted by SS after 42 revisions by writer David Koepp, looks absolutely as phenomenal as CLOSE ENCOUNTERS did in 1977. There is a reason this story remains in our collective consciousness like our first love.
*UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS. As if all of the above wasn’t enough, we have invited our friend, neighbor and 7-Time Oscar winning Sound Designer, Gary Rydstrom, to join us for the June 11th (at 7) special sneak preview. GR will intro, show his sizzle reel and stick around to discuss the film for some sure to be dynamic audience interaction. Ask him about THAT noise.
Be sure you get a private invite from BOBBY ROE for this year’s Father’s Day freebie. INDEPENDENCE DAY is the film, 1000 am is the start time on Sun June 21. You can golf later.
BAINBRIDGE COMEDY NIGHT. JUNE 19th at 8 is the time to celebrate and enjoy a gaggle of giggles as Monica Nevi, Amy Miller and Ricci Armani take the spotlight. Doors at 7:30, Show at 8.
ANOTHER MANS TREASURE. Island Treasure STEVE STOLLEE will again bring his doc of the Worlds Largest Rummage Sale (The Rotary Auction) to our big screen on July 5 at Noon and again on July 6 at 4:30. Admission price of $8 helps us pay our benevolent Landlords the monthly use of their bricks and mortar.
DETENTION. Wonderfully crafted by local filmmakers MARK and EMMA CAMERON, DETENTION is (by my definition) a modern take on BREAKFAST CLUB, filmed entirely on Bainbridge. For some detail and backstory listen to our conversation a few weeks back. Screening dates are August 1 @ 7 and August 2 @ Noon. See you at detention.
Big HLT congrats to STEVE HALL for the SRO debut of COOKIE QUEENS doc. And to the HS Jazz Band and 23rd District Rep TARRA SIMMONS for a pair of energetic and inspiring events over the past weekend. Always happy to host such diverse talent. I was this far (Thanks Maxwell) from taking the stage for a rendition of Deal with Stella’s Dad Pasha, just before the stand-in for the stand-in drummer made it to the stage. I think this might happen sometime down the line. You will be the first to know.
