PRESSURE: Of course one can always find minute and trivial issues (I hate to call them faults) in any movie after 17 viewings. I suppose it has morphed into somewhat a ritual as I rewatch in the hope of seeing the brilliance, genius or easteregg humor in the directors acumen or screenwriters wit with another watch. And, to be precise, PRESSURE has very few errors or omissions. It is a top-notch WWII drama. It is engaging, well-acted and never strays too far from its mission statement of being a true story. One leaves the theatre with a satisfied sense of time well spent and their long held opinions on war validated. I think it misses on two opportunities, and one casting decision, although neither spoil the 7.7% current rating at IMDB. One: The scene when Monty (Damain Lewis) relays the news to the war room brain trust that the boys have taken Omaha Beach with full air and Naval support is met with… golf claps. WHAT? After all that? Nonsense, it should have been with uproarious, New Year’s Eve like bedlam. Second: (And I hate to say this) Brendan Fraser is miscast as IKE. He is terrific and carries the day, but, having been born the year before IKE’s first term and watching, on a black and white TV, his manner and leadership persona, I cannot get past the gross visceral misrepresentation. Shoot me.

DISCLOSURE DAY. Despite my alter ego as a science fiction fanboy, I cannot wait for this one. Spielberg is in the class of Master Storytellers, which also includes, Kubrick, Nolan, Lucas, Scorsese and Coppola, that, from the top to the bottom, consistently produce high-quality cinema. I could add Bigelow, an Anderson, Villenevue, Lanthrimos, Scott and DelToro to that list, but you get the idea. Point is, what is already being hailed as a genre classic, is about to magically appear on our screen. I will defend my use of the ‘magically’ superlative in a minute. Adding to the whimsy, is our pairing of Spielberg’s 7-time Oscar winning Sound Designer, and Bainbridge local, Gary Rydstrom to the special Sneak Preview of DD, Thursday night at 7. Gary spent four hours with us yesterday re-calibrating our Dolby 5.1 surround system to ensure a sonic experience of the spectacular kind on Thursday night. Risking cliche, you don’t want to miss this one.

SPECIAL EVENTS. Comedy is back for a salute to Pride Month at 8pm on Friday, June 19. Monica Nevi, Amy Miller and Ricci Armani headline the show, tix here and doors open at 7:30 on the 19th. On Father’s Day, June 21, Bobby Roe will host a rare morning screening of INDEPENDENCE DAY. Secure your invitation using whatever advanced negotiation skills you have amassed. KOKUHO is an epic love story following a young man from his days as son of Yakuza to star of Kabuki. Part of our World Series of Film and sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association. Island Treasure STEVE STOLLEE, hosts our annual screening of his documentary on the Rotary Auction, ANOTHER MANS TREASURE aka, the biggest Rummage Sale in the World, on Sun July 5 at Noon and Monday July 6 @ 4:30. You cannot legitimately call yourself an Islander without having seen this labor of love at least nine times.

LASTLY. As our transformation to 501(c)(3), NPO status, continues, many tangential components are being crafted to augment the transition. One is its structure. Another is authoring an executive flow chart. And a third creating the job descriptions of said personnel on the aforementioned chart. I am insisting that once official, I be assigned the (thankless) chore of booking our films and events. Here is why. Due to a completely asinine situation between ourselves and one of the larger Studio/Distributors, we will most likely NOT be opening THE ODYSSEY on July 17 like every other theatre in North America. Yes, the ONE film so far this year with the potential to push us into the black, we cannot screen due to circumstances beyond our complete control. I spent the better part of two days feverishly developing a counter offensive as a response to the Studio’s hard-line, illegal and discriminatory new policy, but, frustratingly, I currently have no clout, power, or ammunition to fight this unnecessary and hurtful battle of ego. But will, once we are independent and unshackled to the other outlets in the FAE franchise, when I hope to develop a legitimate arsenal quickly, and with dynamic consequence. You, of course, being the eventual beneficiary of all this labor, as should be. After all wouldn't you rather see a Christopher Nolan blockbuster here on its premiere date? Please wish me luck, going to need all I can get, And please call anytime with comments. 206.451.4336. Hope to hear from you.

All for today. Gotta run. Ciao amici.
