THE COMMENTARY:
Among the many reasons why we do the things we do, or don’t do the things we don’t do, this in specific regard to doing (seeing) or not doing (not seeing) movies at the theatre (any theatre, anywhere) are these, subject, of course, to local custom:
1) Covid forced us into the false belief that we could get the same cinematic experience at home as we do at the theatre.
2) Hollywood’s current slump, lack of blockbuster, four quadrant, tent-pole mega-hits hurts.
3) There are plenty of local alternatives.
4) The weather.
5) The cost.
In the spotlight of this unfortunate reality we have responded by adding as many ‘special events’ as our calendar will allow. Please note the three events in BOLD above as testimony. That is our response. Our answer to the ‘what do we do about it?’ question. Your move. How do you respond? You have only two choices.
MEGALOPOLIS. I am left with the same overly acidic gut reaction as I had with FLOWER MOON, DUNE, OPPENHEIMER and a few other of our recent films. Asking myself and those that showed up to enjoy, ‘where is everyone’? Are they at home watching The Mariners lose again, chopping wood, playing pickle ball, hiking Staircase, broke? I know it isn't the latter because I see you at the Treehouse, Miguelito’s or at the Marketplace. And I know that they are not giving their fine food away. WATCHING THIS MOVIE COSTS LESS THAN A PIZZA.
THE CRITIC. The original cut of the film viewed in 2023 had a very different feel, with Ian McKellen's character more distanced from the narrative core. Distributors Lionsgate had the film re-edited, with newly shot footage, to not only make him the central core of the film but also to have a more palatable ending to the story. This is that re-cut version. Runs 1:41 and rated R.
PAIN & PEACE. A powerful doc on the power of forgiveness. Beautifully filmed, timely and ultimately inspiring. Film followed by talk back with the featured cast. Film two of our ‘Films That Move” series.
VICTIMS OF LOVE. If Rotten Tomatoes had a meta score for music, these guys would carry a 99. They are the best Eagles tribute band this side of Winslow (AZ). A few tickets remain. Doors at 6:30, show at 7.
I AM GRETA. Continuing our run of inspiring films, the one hits home as a precursor to the NO ON I-2117 campaign. Following the FREE screening, Councilman Greg Nance, Mayor Joe Deets and moderator John Kydd will discuss the impact of this initiative (or lack thereof) on every Islander. We are hoping Jay accepts our invitation to attend and speak.
MUSIC FOR MUSHROOMS. Nowhere near as psychedelic as MEGALOPOLIS, MUSIC FOR MUSHROOMS is an 82 minute narrative feature film, an ode to the transformative potential of art and introspection in a world aching for healing and connection. Everyone needs to see this film. Three days only. Make plans.
Ciao a presto.
