Description

I remember finding the lyric to this song in an anthology of lyrics in the drama room at school and a couple of us put it to a simple chord sequence. I found the lyrics again recently and I can remember the chord sequences and the tune ( it was that simple) What I didn't realise is that the song has such an illustrious history. My source tells me it comes from the singing of the Carter Family - and is from the Carter family's recording of the Anthology of American Folk Music through Mickey Miller and Bess Hawes. I believe Johnny Cash also recorded the song.
I haven't gone back and listened to the other versions for fear of putting myself off finishing the recording. Mickey Miller added the " lays in bed / up before the sun verse" & also the "looking for a man/ got her wedding band" section. I added the " got a voice/ got no choice" verse which kind of brings it a little up to date ( well maybe to the 1970's /80's )
