In today's episode, we expand upon the topic of empathy that we began last week. What a giant and bottomless subject! Here's what I know for sure: our communities could use SO much more empathy. I can only imagine how much safer and kinder our lives would be.
The main issues we discussed were:
- We broke down the black-or-white society we grew up in. Black and white doesn't leave any room for our messy human reality.
- Black-or white invites this subconscious tendency within us to perform. Needing our lives to be the perfect performance before an audience leaves out of touch with both our humanity and that of those around us.
- “Empathy is one of the primary ways to reduce perfectionism. But that only works if we learn to receive”-- Paul Parkin
- Empathy is a two-way street. It is only when we learn to both give AND receive that empathy is most transformative.
