In this week’s episode, we go over 5 strength training goals everyone should set for 2024. These 5 goals are: squat to full depth, proper pushup form, nailing your first pull up, deadlifting your bodyweight, and lifting half your bodyweight for 5 reps in an overhead press. We discuss why we think these goals in particular are important. Having good squat depth (hips at 90 degrees or more) keeps your joints healthy, and sustains the ability to do an essential body movement. Bigger range of motion means more muscle fiber recruitment, which means more muscle being built. Then we go over how doing pushups the right way recruits strength in many areas of your body, and is a great barometer of general strength. We talk about what a good pushup is and how to get there. Then we go over pull ups, how everyone should be able to do at least one, and how to get there. We move on to discuss how being able to deadlift your bodyweight is also key for overall health and fitness, and contributes to strength in many aspects of everyday life. Then we discuss why we think lifting half your bodyweight for 5 reps of an overhead press is essential for overall strength.
