“Church” – The Most Misunderstood Word in the Bible (Part 1)

Our first discussion in this series deals with what I believe to be the most misunderstood word used in religious circles today. Most people think that the “church” is something that started in the New Testament. Some think that a ‘church’ is a building. I could fill this page listing the misunderstandings that people have about this confusing word – and it IS a confusing word! However, there was no such confusion in the original biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek. This two-part teaching will help clarify the concepts that have been clouded by the word C-H-U-R-C-H.

1. What Hebrew and Greek words do we translate as “church”?
2. Where in the Bible is the first occurrence of the Hebrew word for “church”?
3. Is ekklesia always translated “church”?
