Family Killings in Ripon - Frightful Fridays
News of the Times Episode 210 | 1874
1874 was a remarkable year in Ripon North Yorkshire with two unrelated cases of family members killing other family members.
Our first case is a soldier on return to his parents’ home. It is not a happy return and William is eventually asked to leave the home by his father. On the day of his departure his 16 year old sister follows him. She is found dead with her dress above her knees. William has disappeared.
In our second story, poor Ann Barker, known to be physically and verbally abused by her husband and adult children is violently slain in the cellar.
Both cases put forward the insanity defence, but only one of the appeals succeeded.
