Prophecy- what is a prophet?  Someone charged by God to speak on His behalf
Books of prophecy:
Main 3: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel / 12 "lesser" prophets 12 books originally
on a single scroll: Hosea- Joel-Amos-Obadiah-Jonah- Micah- Nahum- Habakkuk-Zephaniah- Haggai-Zechariah-Malachi
what prophets did: 

Scripture References: Isaiah 20:3 -stunt / Hosea - living out the metaphor of unfaithfulness
Amos - "Day of the Lord" / 2 Peter 3:10  day of the Lord compared to a thief

Apocalypse - definition: revelation given by God of a heavenly perspective 

5 steps for reading this type of literature:
1) Watch for symbols
2) Don't overanalyze or bring those symbols into a modern context
3) Keep the original audience in mind
4)Think about the purpose of the writing 
5) Study in community
