Παρά (para) is a preposition meaning ‘alongside’. Αλλος (allos) can be used in Greek as both a suffix like here and a prefix and it means ‘another’ . The combined word was an adjective and the original use by the ancient Greeks was in Mathematics to describe to equidistant surfaces or lines.
