This word has changed very little in its travels and it took the common route arriving here. Greek, Latin, French and in the 1600 across the English channel. Πρώτο (proto) in both ancient and modern Greek means 'The first' and τύπος (tipos) comes from the ancient greek verb τίπτω( tipto) meaning 'I hit'; that verb, used metaphorically, gave its name to 'stamping', which was a way of verifying originality.
