Ρις (Rhis) in ancient Greek (and as a medical term, in modern Greek too) means 'nose'. Κέρας (Keras) means 'horn' . Since in Greek 'I' is pronounced as 'E' and the Greek alphabet doesn't have the letter 'C' at all, the Latin version of the combined word, has a different spelling. And that's how it arrived in England. In both languages however, a large animal with a horn above their nose is a Ρινόκερος/Rhinoceros
