Ash Wednesday is the 1st day of LENT which is 40 days or repentance until Easter Sunday. People use ashes to make a cross on their forehead.
People in the Bible who used ashes and sackcloth for repentance:
Esther 4:1 “When Mordecai learned all that had been done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes and went through the city, wailing with a loud and bitter cry”
Job 42:6, “Therefore, I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes”
Daniel 9:3 “I turned to the Lord God, to seek help, in prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.”
Jonah 3:6, after he preached to the people of Nineveh
