Supernatural Season 8, Episode 17, Goodbye Stranger recap 🍕 A warehouse full of dead Deans, a hunt for Lucifer’s crypt, and the return of Meg (Rachel Miner) on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Naomi has been running the most disturbing training program in Heaven, and Berly has some thoughts about putting in a clone request. Back on Earth, demons are possessing local history buffs and digging 15-foot holes all over town, and Cas shows up right on time, acting very strange. He’s not the only familiar face. Crowley’s hostage is someone the hosts never expected to see again.

Episode Highlights:

Both hosts were thrilled to have Meg back. Her scenes with Cas are adorable, and her talk with Sam might be the first time anyone just listens to him about his missing year. Berly wanted a bigger redemption arc for her, but there’s a peace to her story that lands. A showdown in Lucifer’s crypt had the hosts squirming, and Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins make every second of it uncomfortable in the right way. The makeup on the beaten characters is excellent, and that’s the extent of the gore. The only frustration is Naomi. What does she want, and who is she taking orders from?

In the lore segment, LA comes up empty on Lucifer’s crypt, so she settles for Lucifer’s tomb, via a Lifehacker article from Christmas Eve 2024. A TikTok conspiracy claimed Pope Francis was opening the Tomb of Lucifer, but he was really opening five holy doors for the Jubilee, a ritual that happens every 25 years. One of those doors was inside a Roman prison, the first time a pope has done that. There really is a Tomb of Lucifer in the Vatican Necropolis, under St. Peter’s Basilica, but it predates anyone calling the devil Lucifer, and nobody knows why it got the name. Plus, Berly wonders if Crowley found any Labubus down there.

“I miss the apocalypse’s simplicity. I was bad, you were good, life was easier. Now it’s all so messy. I’m kind of good, which sucks, and you’re kind of bad, which is actually all manner of hot.” – Meg
