A remembering of two young girls one generation apart.
June Palmer – "My Mom Anne was born to Albert and Constance on a cold January night in 1938. The snow was deep, and the winter chill gripped the night – a beautiful girl was born. Albert and Constance had four boys, Norman, Frank, Philip, and Johnny. Their daughters are Bella, Florence, Anne, Margaret, and Marie."
"Dog Eating Prairie is the name of the trap line where Anne was born and grew up until she was about six years old. The family would return for trapping season and live at the homestead during the off-season of trapping."
Anne Mitchell - "I remember when we moved out of the old log house where I was born. We moved into a new cabin; it was not far but in the same area. The old cabin was then used as a shelter for the horses. I remember I was on the roof, and I would throw hay through the hole in the roof for the horses. The only thing left of the old cabin now is the outline. The grass is grown over, and it is hard to tell where the houses were.
My Mom used to take care of my grandmother's grave site. It was a simple grave site. A big willow grew out of the middle, and my Mom just kept cleaning around the willow. It was like a grave marker. It is interesting that it grew there. Dog Eaten Prairie was a big field, and then suddenly, this big willow grew on the gravesite and nowhere else."
June Palmer is a First Nations Iskwew (woman) from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, Canada.
June is married to her sweetheart Brian. June is a proud mother of four, a Kohkom (grandmother) to Thorin, Caroline, Marie, Raya, and Marceline.
June is an amazing intuitive healer with a passion for sound healing. She travels extensively, sharing her sound medicine and intuitive gifts and talents. June's spirit lodge name is Mikwan, which means feather in her Cree language.
