In today’s episode, I talk with my friend Brion about his experiences growing up as a Black man in America.
The experiences he shares do not represent how all Black men grow up in the United States, but it is his experience growing up in Trenton NJ.
It started with the death of his grandfather when he was 8 years old, and not understanding what he was feeling and how to process the grief.
Brion is a follower of Islam and he shares with us the beliefs that he has about death and dying according to his faith.
I share some of what I have observed about death and grief in the black community from my experiences with my friends, coworkers, and students.
This is by no means an expert opinion on the matter, only two friends having a conversation about our experiences.
As with all of my episodes, the conversation will challenge your thoughts and beliefs about death, dying, grief, and living life. Please listen with an open mind.
A quick warning that we do talk about gun violence and suicide in this episode, there are no graphic details and you can look to the time stamps if you would like to skip those parts of our conversation.
Brion shares about gun violence in his community including the death of two of his friends.
Together we share our experience around the death of my coworker and his teacher Chef Jonathan. Both of us felt his loss deeply but in different ways.
I have also added a full transcript of this conversation if you want to read it after listening.
