I recently re-read George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. I am always amazed at how some writers, philosophers, or artists have the foresight to see society and predict the future. A key theme is the effective use of language by those in power to control people. Political power brokers and wealthy elites use the rhetoric of division to keep power, control the minds of the masses, and ensure people are pushed into ideological tribes of hate.In this podcast, I discuss the rhetoric of division deployed against the people by political and wealthy elites to manipulate the masses into believing all the problems of society are caused by 'other people' who don't hold the same views. When the elites are successful with their rhetorical strategies, they get away with deceit, corruption, and manipulation as the masses are too busy name-calling, blaming, and attacking each other as racist, sexist, misogynist, socialist, snowflake, or whatever label is in vogue at the moment.I will also discuss two simple, effective ways to not get swept away in their deceptive ploys, which will help all of us to become more aware and alert, so the rhetoric of division becomes less effective.
