Technology has evolved exponentially. The human brain has not. Psychologically, humans are still prone to think the same way, even with incredible technological and scientific knowledge gains. We need to objectively evaluate technology, not with hyperbole or conspiracy theory, but with clear eyes to understand how it has come to dominate our lives, so we can consider where a life 'fully integrated with machines' may take civilization. The dystopian future portrayed in science fiction and Hollywood films in which machines overtake human strengths and intelligence to exterminate us is less likely than machines manipulating natural human frailties.Humans are prone to addictions, self-esteem issues, anxiety, fears, desires to belong, greed, radicalization, and polarization. Machines modifying behavior by playing on our natural weaknesses is real and deployed right now across social media and search. We will discuss how it is happening, the field of study known as Captology, and what we can do as a society to ensure we do not let AI, machine learning, and sweeping algorithms to control human thought and action.
